Swimming in the PondSwimming in the Pond
Swimming in the Pond The Inviting Water After a hot, dusty walk, the boys find a beaver pond behind a dam. The water looks clear and cool, and they eagerly strip and dive in. Chris is first, followed by the others. The relief from the heat is immense, and they play and splash, enjoying a moment of pure joy. The Hidden Danger Unbeknownst to them, the pond is infested with leeches. The boys swim and dive, never noticing the blackish-gray lumps attaching to their bodies. The water feels clean, but it harbors a hidden menace. The Discovery Vern stands on his hands in the shallows, and his legs are covered with leeches. The others see them and panic. Teddy screams, and they all scramble out, frantically picking the bloodsuckers off their bodies. The idyllic swim turns into a nightmare.
The Granddaddy LeechThe Granddaddy Leech
The Granddaddy Leech The Horror on Gordon's Testicles After removing most of the leeches, Gordon discovers a large one attached to his testicles, its body swollen and purple. He is unable to remove it himself and asks Chris for help, but Chris is too disgusted and vomits. Gordon must face the leech alone. The Burst Gordon finally picks it off, but it bursts between his fingers, covering his hand with his own blood. He begins to cry, overwhelmed by the violation and the horror. The incident leaves a permanent scar and a deep-seated phobia of leeches. The Aftermath The boys dress in silence, the joy of the swim replaced by shame and trauma. They continue their journey, but the leech attack has broken their spirits. Gordon later reflects on how this moment of vulnerability foreshadows the larger horrors they will face.
